Avoiding Alcohol for a Healthier Spine
Alcohol, when consumed responsibly and within moderation, can be a way to break the ice within a social environment, wind down after a long week at work, or enjoy a fine selection of your favorite wines at a beautiful vineyard. Yet with the positives of alcohol, come the negatives of alcohol. In this post, we’ll be discussing the negatives which can occur when you end up drinking too much one evening and how those negatives may affect your spine.
Dehydration Caused By Alcohol
Dehydration from consuming too much alcohol is one of the main contributors to hangovers. Not only does dehydration cause hangovers, it also puts a strain on your spine as the spinal cord requires adequate hydration to properly cushion your discs to prevent injury or a slipped disc. If you choose to consume alcohol in excess consistently, this may pose an issue later on down the road. Chronic dehydration from chronic binge drinking is never a good thing. Combine those aspects with how it may affect your spine and it’s probably best to cut back on drinking the next time you go out.
Accidents
Accidents are bound to happen throughout our lives, it’s just how it is. When you combine alcohol with nearly any activity, you’ve just increased the likelihood of an accident tremendously. Alcohol reduces our inhibitions and coordination. Without those two factors running at normal capacity, you’re most likely going to see an increase in chances of an accident occurring whether it’s within a car, on the sports field, or even just walking down the stairs. These increased risks of accidents occurring may end up resulting in a spinal cord injury.
General Wear & Tear After a Night Out
Sometimes, after a long night out, you may end up with some bumps and bruises and not recall where they came from. This general wear and tear on your body may eventually pave the way for your body to become injured in a much more serious fashion in the future. Be sure to always think of your body as something you must protect and you can reduce the chances of encountering an injury to the spine over time.
