How to Cope With Chronic Pain

June 18, 2019 by Neurosurgery & Spine Consultants

More than 50 million people in the United States suffer with chronic pain. It is medically defined as pain lasting more than 12 weeks that affects how a person lives their daily life. Inflammation or dysfunctional nerves are often the source of chronic, long-lasting physical pain. It can also lead to symptoms of depression, anger, and frustration.

How to cope with the physical, mental, and emotional effects of chronic pain

Here are some helpful tips for coping with the negative effects of chronic pain:

• Get moving
No, really! While rest is important for acute pain, like a sprained ankle or a muscle pull, rest actually reinforces chronic pain. Inactivity leads to stiff, weak muscles, which can actually intensify your chronic pain. Talk to your doctor to find out if low-impact exercises like walking, cycling, or taking a yoga class could help alleviate your pain.

• Pace yourself
Don’t overdo it with daily activities. Once you know your limits on activities that aggravate your pain, to do those activities for less time than your limit, then take a break before your pain flares up.

• Consult a professional
If you’ve done everything you can to manage your pain and still feel overwhelmed, talk to a pain care specialist to find out what type of treatment is right for you. Neurosurgery Spine & Consultants offer several medical treatments to help you manage your pain, including:
o Prescription medications
o Physical therapy
o Steroid injections
o Advanced nerve blocks
o Back braces
