The Importance of Sleep for Your Spine

Finding the Right Mattress

As we discuss sleep within this post, it’s important to remember the piece of furniture within the household where we tend to sleep the most: the bed. When you focus on having a good bed to lay your head and sleep throughout the night, you’ll already be setting yourself up for success for many years to come. Sleep is something we all need, no matter what. With that being said, let’s dive into the importance of sleep for your spine health and why sleep really does matter so much!

Discovering the Right Sleeping Position

Everyone sleeps differently. Some are side-sleepers, some are stomach sleepers, and some lay on their back when they’re catching some Zzzzs. It’s all about personal preference and ultimately how you sleep is up to you. Whichever position works the best for YOU, is what matters. We’re not here to say one sleeping position is better than the other, because again, it comes down to personal preference. As long as you’re comfortable and your back is not feeling sore or stiff upon awakening, you’re most likely sleeping in a position which works for your spine and body.

Winding Down Before You Go to Sleep

We all enjoy browning on our smartphones before bed, yet multiple studies have found the excessive exposure to blue light emitted from our smartphones causes us to have our circadian rhythms thrown off. It’s important to wind down properly with a good book, or something which doesn’t involve staring at a screen (we do that enough as is!). Relaxing, destresing, and focusing on your goals and ambitions can help you wind down successfully before actually falling asleep.

Sleeping Without Disturbances

It’s important to have a dark room wherever you choose to sleep. Additionally, it’s important to not have loud disturbances either, as this may cause further disruption within  your sleeping cycle. Utilizing some blackout curtains or a white noise device such as a low-powered fna can help establish a much more sleep-friendly bedroom.

Sleeping Provides Much Need Repair form Our Day-to-Day Stress

According to a Dr. Twery from the National Center for Sleep Disorders, “Adequate amounts of sleep are necessary for healthy bone marrow, the spongy tissue inside the bones that contains stem cells, which eventually form blood cells in the body. “We get stem cells and immune cells from bone marrow. Healthy sleep is part of that.” With this in mind, why not place greater importance on catching a full eight hours every night if possible? It’ll surely be beneficial for your body.
