The Importance of Nutrition for a Proper Surgery Recovery

May 20, 2021 by Neurosurgery & Spine Consultants

Surgery recovery is something we all need to bounce back and return to the healthy state we were in beforehand. Without a proper nutritional plan, we run the risk of not recovering as quickly as we could otherwise. Throughout this post, we’ll be discussing the benefits of including proper nutrition in your post-surgery recovery plan and how maintaining proper nutrition can benefit your entire health altogether. Enjoy!

Protein Intake

Adequate protein intake helps rebuild muscle, provide the body with resources to heal, and ensure you’re on the right track to making a move in the right direction. Without adequate protein intake, there will be deficiency present which will most likely result in a delayed, or even worsened outcome post-surgery. We understand there are some individuals who adhere to certain diets, yet whichever diet you choose to partake in; you’ll need to incorporate proteins of various types to successfully regenerate valuable nerve and tissue growth throughout the body.

Controlling Sugar Intake

Sugar is not ideal for post-surgery recovery. High sugar intake may make one more vulnerable to infection due to weakened immune system functionality. When you have a surgery, you’re already at a higher risk of infection tha  if you had not had surgery. So why increase the chances if you can control it? High sugar intake inherently reduces the capabilities of your natural immune system and it can affect your ability to fight off infection, which could reduce your ability to successfully recover from a surgery. If you must consume sugar, try to select a natural sugar option such as a piece of organic fruit. The fiber within said fruit will help regulate youth blood sugar levels much better than if you were to eat a large candy bar.

Well-Balanced Diet Full of Real, Whole Foods

Consuming a well-balanced diet full of real, whole foods will do wonders for your mind, body, and overall wellbeing. Eating unprocessed, or minimally processed foods can hello your body with post-surgery recovery. The reasons behind this consist of the fact your body is craving bountiful amounts of nutrients, vitamins, and minerals when it’s in a recovery phase. When you feed your body what it needs to successfully heal, you’ll be able to recover quicker in most cases. Treating your body like a temple and nourishing your body with the right foods can go a long way towards helping you recover and rebound in due time.
