What is the Cause of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

March 28, 2018 by Neurosurgery & Spine Consultants

Have you ever experienced a sensation of numbness, tingling or burning in your hand or fingers? If so, you may be suffering from carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a painful condition of the hand and fingers that is caused by a pinched nerve in the wrist.

The affected nerve is called the median nerve and it runs through the length of the arm, passes through the carpal tunnel in the wrist and ends in the hand. This nerve controls the movement of all your fingers (except the pinky). When this nerve becomes pinched, it causes a swelling and narrowing in the carpal tunnel.

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome Treatment in San Antonio

Carpal tunnel syndrome can be the result of many factors, including:

  • Repetitive motions of the wrist
Repetitive motions of the wrist, particularly those that involve the hands being higher than the wrist, may aggravate the carpal tunnel and cause swelling.
  • Obesity
Excess body weight may cause painful compression of the median nerve in your hand and cause carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Rheumatoid arthritis
Rheumatoid arthritis consists of swelling of the joints and tendons, carpal tunnel syndrome is a common complication of this disease.
  • Diabetes
Diabetes and other metabolic disorders affect the body’s nerves and make them more susceptible to compression, increasing the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Hypothyroidism
Hypothyroidism may cause the membrane that surrounds the tendons in the carpal tunnel to swell, causing carpal tunnel syndrome.
  • Pregnancy
Pregnancy causes a build-up of fluid in the tissues of your wrist, which compresses the median nerve and causes the tingling and numbness associated with carpal tunnel syndrome. Carpal tunnel syndrome caused by pregnancy is treatable, however, treatment must be administered after delivery.
